Minor 11th Chords on Piano

The minor 11th chord extends the minor 9th by adding a perfect 11th — creating a rich, dark, and atmospheric voicing. Unlike major and dominant 11ths, the minor 11th has no 3rd/11th clash, making it one of the smoothest extended chords available.

Formula: Root – Minor 3rd – Perfect 5th – Minor 7th – Major 9th – Perfect 11th
Scale degrees: 1–♭3–5–♭7–9–11
Sound: Rich, dark, atmospheric, smooth
Symbol: m11, min11 (Cm11, Dm11)

No clash — the smoothest 11th chord: Because the minor 3rd (E♭ in Cm11) is a whole step below the 11th (F), there is no dissonant clash. This makes minor 11th chords uniquely smooth among 11th voicings. Dm11 as the ii chord in a ii–V–I is one of the most sophisticated sounds in jazz harmony.
