Major ♭6 Pentatonic Scales on Piano

The major ♭6 pentatonic scale replaces the natural 6th of the major pentatonic with a flat 6th, creating a five-note scale with a darker, more ambiguous color. It appears in Japanese music (as part of the In scale tradition), in Indian ragas, and provides a useful improvisational color over major chords when you want a hint of tension without committing to a full seven-note scale.

Formula: W–W–WH–H–WH
Intervals: P1–M2–M3–P5–m6–P8
Scale degrees: 1–2–3–5–♭6
Sound: Exotic, Japanese-influenced, bittersweet, pentatonic
Also known as: Kumoi pentatonic (relative), major pentatonic with flat 6
