White Keys vs. Black Keys
52 White Keys
White keys represent the 7 natural notes: C, D, E, F, G, A, B. These repeat across all 7+ octaves. Each octave contains 7 white keys, and the pattern starts fresh at C.
36 Black Keys
Black keys are the sharps and flats — the 5 raised pitches that fill the gaps between certain white keys. They are grouped in alternating clusters of 2 and 3, making it easy to find any note by sight.
The 2-and-3 pattern: Black keys always appear in groups of two (C♯/D♭, D♯/E♭) and three (F♯/G♭, G♯/A♭, A♯/B♭). This repeating shape is how pianists navigate the keyboard by touch — middle C, for example, sits immediately to the left of the first black key in every group of two.
Octaves on a Piano
An octave is a group of 12 notes (7 white + 5 black) after which the pattern repeats. A full 88-key piano spans 7 complete octaves plus a few extra keys at each end (the lowest key is A0, not C; the highest is C8).
The number on each note indicates its octave: C4 is middle C, C5 is one octave higher, C3 one octave lower. Octave numbers reset at each C — so B3 is directly below C4.
