How to Play the D Chromatic Scale
Practice the D Chromatic Scale hands separately at a slow, steady tempo before putting them together. Aim for even rhythm and a relaxed wrist. The goal is a smooth, connected line where every note sounds the same length and volume. Once both hands feel comfortable on their own, layer them at the same slow tempo and only speed up when the joined version is clean.
Right Hand (RH)
Place your right hand over the keys with the thumb on the root. Use the fingering: 1-3-1-2-3-1-3-1-3-1-2-3-1 (1 = thumb, 2 = index, 3 = middle, 4 = ring, 5 = pinky).
Right hand: thumb (1) on D, middle (3) on D#, then tuck the thumb (1) under to E, index (2) on F, middle (3) on F#, then tuck the thumb (1) under to G, middle (3) on G#, then tuck the thumb (1) under to A, middle (3) on A#, then tuck the thumb (1) under to B, index (2) on C, middle (3) on C#, then tuck the thumb (1) under to D.

Watch for the thumb tuck: the thumb (1) passes under your fingers at notes 3, 6, 8, 10, 13 (E, G, A, B, D). Keep your wrist level and quiet. Only the thumb moves under, the hand stays in place above the keys.
Left Hand (LH)
For the left hand, start with your pinky on the root. Use the fingering: 1-3-2-1-3-1-3-1-3-2-1-3-1
Left hand: thumb (1) on D, then cross the middle (3) over to D#, index (2) on E, thumb (1) on F, then cross the middle (3) over to F#, thumb (1) on G, then cross the middle (3) over to G#, thumb (1) on A, then cross the middle (3) over to A#, index (2) on B, thumb (1) on C, then cross the middle (3) over to C#, thumb (1) on D.

Watch for the crossover: a long finger (3 or 4) crosses over the thumb at notes 2, 5, 7, 9, 12 (D#, F#, G#, A#, C#). Lift the long finger over cleanly without disturbing the thumb. Descending the scale, the thumb will pass under at the same spots in reverse.
