About this excerpt

The Famous Opening

Beethoven's first movement opens with a hushed, three-layer texture: a tolling bass octave, a continuous middle-register triplet arpeggio outlining the C♯ minor triad, and — entering only after several bars — a sparse melody above. It is among the most studied piano openings in Western music.

This staging preview renders the first eight measures as a simplified MVP: stationary C♯ minor harmony with the iconic G♯–C♯–E triplet pattern and a sustained C♯₂ bass. Future revisions will follow Beethoven's actual harmonic motion (the move to A major in measure 5 and beyond) and add the full 65-bar movement.
